FrameMaker provides page numbers and Gheadings from the source of the cross-reference and can update them if they change. Help on cross-references LFor information on the controls for creating and managing cross-references, Lclick an item in the topic list to the right or click an active area below. TThe Cross -Reference dialog box contains controls to insert and maintain Rcross-references. The Cross-Reference Format dialog box is where $you define cross-reference formats. MIf text or numbering at the source changes, you use the Update Cross-v TReferences dialog box to update cross-references. The Update Unresolved rt LCross-References dialog box is where you specify the location of source or @information if FrameMaker t find it while updating. SThe Convert Cross-References to Text dialog box converts references to . editable text. Special menu > Cross-Reference Dialog box where you insert a cross-reference in text; create, edit, or delete Jcross-reference formats; update cross-references; display the source of a @cross-reference; and convert cross-references to editable text. EThere are two kinds of cross-references. A paragraph cross-reference o Irefers to a whole paragraph, such as a heading or figure title. When you Ninsert a paragraph cross-reference, FrameMaker puts a cross-reference Mmarker at the beginning of the source paragraph to identify it as the source of a cross-reference. OA spot cross-reference refers to a specific word or phrase. FrameMaker Idoes not insert spot cross-reference markers. You must place a Cross-Ref Zmarker in the text using the window before you insert a spot cross- reference. Morecr Source Document 0Specifies the document that contains the source c 0information for the cross-reference. The pop-up a *menu lists the documents currently open. Source Type 6Lists the tags of all paragraph formats in the source 1document s catalog. Also contains the item Cross-r Ref Markers. 6To refer to a paragraph in the source document, click .the paragraph s tag. To refer to a spot cross- ,reference marker, click Cross-Ref Markers. Reference Source 5Lists the first line of each paragraph in the source v 0document whose tag matches the selection in the 0Source Type scroll list. If you chose Cross-Ref 9Markers, this list displays the marker text from all the 3Cross-Ref markers. Choose an item from the list as ocu %the source of your cross-reference. 4The range of pages on which the items in the scroll ts &list appear is above the scroll list. Format ose (pop-up menu) /Pop-up menu that specifies the cross-reference 7format to use. The definition of the format you choose )appears to the right of the pop-up menu. Format (button) =Opens the Cross-Reference Format dialog box t 4where you create, edit, or delete a cross-reference format. Go To 6Displays the source of a selected cross-reference. If 6necessary, FrameMaker opens the document that contains the source. Update 9Opens the Update Cross-References dialog box #where you update cross-references. Convert >Opens the Convert Cross-References to Text dialog 3box where you change a cross-reference to editable men text. Insert 4Inserts the cross-reference at the insertion point. 2If a cross-reference or text is selected when you 0choose the Cross-Reference command, this button ss 5changes to Replace. The cross-reference will replace p 'the selected text or cross-reference. Dialog box where you create, change, or delete a cross-reference format. LYou open this dialog box by clicking the Format button in the Cross Reference dialog box. 5Specifies the name of the format to create, edit, or e delete. Definition 4Shows the definition of the cross-reference format. ef 3The definition can contain text and items from the s-R 1Building Blocks scroll list. It can be up to 255 e 0characters long. You can add nonbreaking spaces t *and special hyphenation to it. Spaces and 2punctuation appear in the document exactly as you type them in the definition. Formats 1Lists the cross-reference formats that have been 4created for the document. When you select a format, te 8its name and definition appear in their respective text cl boxes. Building Blocks 7Lists the system values you can use in the definition. he 8They begin with a dollar sign ($). For a description of 8the building blocks, see Cross-reference format e ,building blocks in Syntax Descriptions. :To insert a scroll list item into the definition, put the 9insertion point in the Definition text box and click the item in the scroll list. 4The list also includes the character formats in the document s Character Catalog. .To change the character format of text in the ;definition, type the format or insert it from the Building :Blocks scroll list. The format affects only the text that follows it in the definition. 7To change back to the paragraph s default font, insert $<Default Font> in the definition. Moreen .Defines a new cross-reference format. The new 4format appears in the Formats scroll list. When you ty 2click Done, the format also appears on the Format /pop-up menu in the Cross-Reference dialog box. Change 3Applies the changes to the cross-reference format. ert 0When you click Done, cross-references using the (format are updated with the new format. Delete 3Deletes the cross-reference format. Unresolved References 5Opens the Update Unresolved Cross-References 4dialog box where you can fix cross-references whose th ;source information FrameMaker could not find while x b updating. You open this dialog box by enc Uclicking Unresolved References in the Update Cross-References dialog box and then clicking Update. PA cross-reference is unresolved if FrameMaker cannot find the Cross-Ref Hmarker the reference is referring to. Unresolved cross-references occur fe Fwhen a Cross-Ref marker has been deleted or moved to another file, or Jwhen the file containing the marker has been moved, renamed, or deleted. IIf you cannot find the source of an unresolved cross-reference with this Gdialog box, use the Find/Change command to locate the cross-reference. LThen delete the cross-reference if you no longer need it or replace it with another cross-reference. FYou can generate a list of cross-references to help you resolve cross- \references. See Generate /Book for documents or File to Book for da books. Use the scroll list to redirect the cross-reference &to a new source document if you have: Renamed the source document )Moved source information to another file Update 1Updates the references to reflect the new source r document you specified.
